Abstract

The inexorable forward March of technology and the advent of smartphone applications offer effortless communication. WhatsApp is one of the most common and widely accepted mobile applications for communication and collaboration. We conduct this research to identify the influence of WhatsApp among the employees in an educational institution and to compare the means of communication used at workplace. A web-based survey was conducted among employees at AlBuraimi University College, Oman. The study revealed that respondents preferred WhatsApp for informal communication and email for formal communication. Email was preferred for communication with students and academic works. The results also showed that WhatsApp enables faster and easy communication, sharing ideas, chatting and suggested WhatsApp has a positive impact on them. The results also shed light on some of the consequences of WhatsApp usage like privacy intervention, concentration reduction in work which may lead to delayed work completion. Majority of respondents didn’t suggest WhatsApp in learning and teaching process. The results affirmed the influence of WhatsApp in quick and effective communication. Regardless of the advantages and acceptance of WhatsApp, the study also revealed the reluctance of respondents in using WhatsApp for formal communication, academic works and in learning process.
