Abstract

Based on the upper echelon theory and the research paradigm of "executive background characteristics - strategic behavior - economic consequences", this paper applies data from China's A-share listed companies in both Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2010 to 2019as the research samples to explore the mechanism of TMT characteristics and CSR on corporate performance. This paper examines the relationship among TMT characteristics, CSR and corporate performance, as well as the mediating effect of CSR between TMT characteristics and firm performance. The study finds that TMT characteristics, specifically, age, tenure, education level, have a significant impact on CSR and corporate performance. Moreover, CSR plays a mediating role between TMT characteristics and corporate performance. The findings of this study have important implications for firms in terms of their strategic management of TMT characteristics and CSR.
