Abstract

The 2017 survey of Faculty Attitude on Technology conducted by Insider Higher Ed reported on the low percentage of partnerships between university faculty and instructional designers in online course development. Experts said it is not a surprise because instructional designers are underutilized and their role in Higher Education is still not clear. This qualitative study examined the faculty members’ perceptions about their mentorship relations with instructional designers when they designed and developed asynchronous online courses. This study also explored factors that may lead to successful mentorship relationships between instructional designers as mentors and faculty members as mentees. Higher education administration, university faculty, and instructional designers will benefit from the results of this study.

Summary

Introduction

This study investigates your experience in the planning, producing, and teaching of an online course mentored by an instructional designer. You will be questioned about whether the mentorship prepared you to independently produce another online course. The study will be examining your perceptions about the effectiveness of working cooperatively with instructional designers. You will be asked several questions about the benefits and challenges you encountered and why it may have been beneficial to work cooperatively with an instructional designer. Please be assured that no one except for the researchers will have access to these recordings. Understand that this interview is voluntary and there is no penalty for withdrawing at any time. We expect the interview to take one to one-and-a-half hours
