Abstract

The objective of this study is to explore the impact of spiritual needs on the quality of life (QOL) of hemodialysis patients at PICOMS Dialysis Centre. Design: Qualitative, open ended questionnaires. Setting: Pusat Hemodialysis MAIWP-PICOMS. Sample: Six (6) patients receiving hemodialysis. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with total of six (6) eligible patients. Informed consent was obtained from each participant prior to study. Interview completed until saturation of information. Findings: The exploratory finding from this research could be summarized into six (6) themes. Firstly, relationship with Allah; secondly, meditation in Islamic way; thirdly, coping with the diseases; fourth, emotional well-being; fifth, physical well-being and lastly, improvement of quality of life. Conclusions: The disease and treatment of dialysis were significantly affected many angles of patients’ quality of life. However, religion approach, emotional support, social support and ability to cope with this situation will give a hope to continue their journey of life. Nevertheless, spiritual approached may bring back the values in the patient’s quality of life.
