Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) contain thousands of small sensors, which consume energy to transfer data to the base station. Many protocols have been developed to decrease energy consumption in WSNs. Node clustering is one of the introduced protocols that has been used in P-SEP, which is a fog-based architecture to decrease energy consumption and improve the lifetime of networks. Providing security is another challenge in WSNs. Authentication, integrity and confidentiality services can be used to protect WSNs from common attacks. Application of these services pose an overhead and decrease energies of nodes. In this paper, a new algorithm based on P-SEP is devised that is named the impact of Security services on Fog-based WSNs Lifetime (SFL) which security overhead and the average of energy consumption for transferring protected data from the fog nodes to the cloud are discussed in this protocol. The results of simulation show that the overhead of integrity service is 15.7097% more than authentication and 10.7750% greater than confidentiality also, the average amount of energy usage in SFL protocol is reduced by 9% meanwhile the number of alive network nodes is increased by 74%, as compared to P-SEP protocol.
