Abstract

AbstractA study was made on the impact of predators on the exotic aphids Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji (bluegreen aphid) and Therioaphis trifolii (Monell) f. maculata (spotted alfalfa aphid) in lucerne. The predator complex consisted mainly of Coccinella repanda Thunberg, Micromus sp., syrphid larvae, predatory mites and spiders. Predators significantly reduced numbers of aphids in 3 of 6 plant growth periods when aphids were abundant but they did not prevent significant yield Ioss. In combination with various parasitic hymenoptera, predators could be important pest management tools.
