Abstract

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in individuals ages 1-46 years in the United States. Many of these traumatically injured patients are uninsured which may result in a significant financial burden on trauma centers. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was designed to expand access to affordable health care for Americans. The insurance status of trauma patients and the potential financial impact of the ACA on trauma centers is unknown. This study sought to determine the impact of the ACA on insurance status of trauma patients at a Level I trauma center and financial outcomes.
