Abstract

Last year PEMEX introduced the use of seismic inversion to reduce the geological risk on its projects. During this time PEMEX has conducted several training courses to increase the interpreter's technical skills. The present work is focused on one of the branches of this training, Seismic Trace Inversion. The first step has been to increase the knowledge of the personnel in critical areas to they can perform and supervise this kind of work, e.g. Seismic Trace Inversion. The next step was to introduce high‐quality controls into the process of design, data acquisition, data processing, and logging in order to have the best data to be employed in the methodologies. Finally, the application of the appropriate methodologies (i.e., prestack depth migration, seismic trace inversion, spectral decomposition, AVO, azimuthal AVO, neural networks, etc.) that have the ability to extract more information from the seismic data. The applications of high technology in the exploration process will yield more information from the combined use of seismic and well data. The benefits will be to reduce the risks of the drillable prospects, cut the costs, and to reduce the cycle time in the exploration process.
