Abstract

Globalization is a complex, multidimensional, and in a sense an omnipresent phenomenon of contemporary society. Therefore, the areas of conflict and conflict resolution are also affected by this phenomenon. Building on the notion of formalism, an analytical concept is proposed to analyze its application to the process of globalization and its main features, leading to a conclusion that this new period represents a trend towards a more informal world (unlike the formal trend registered with the Westphalian era). So it would be logical to expect the conflict resolution domain to have followed the same movement. However, evidences and other signs seem to point otherwise. This paper focuses on the notion of formalism and on these paradoxical trends registered when a comparison is established between the globalizations phenomenon as a whole and the area of conflict resolution. The mechanisms employed to settle international conflicts seem to register a formal trend. Why and what are the possible implications and explanations of this?
