Abstract

This paper explores the roles played by concentration and elasticity in a model of line of business profitability. It concludes that the roles are conceptually distinguishable, that concentration has a seperate effect on profit (via the degree of collusion) which is not eliminated by its dependence on elasticity, and that assertions about a bias due to the exclusion of elasticity are based on incomplete theoretical foundations.
