Abstract
Should e-government support competing standards or choose one? There is a controversy about the impact of standards wars on innovation with far-reaching implications for public IT procurement. To help governments weight their decision, this article discusses the impact of competing standards on interoperability as well as market and innovation effects. An equation is formulated to illustrate in a nutshell what is at stake.
