Abstract
Apatient visited a dentist with symptoms of jaw pain and clicking that began months previously after receiving a new crown. After examining the patient’s masticatory muscles, the dentist made a diagnosis of masticatory myofascial pain, a subtype of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). With careful history taking, the dentist determined that the patient also had several comorbid conditions often found in patients with chronic pain. These included chronic headaches, back and neck pain, and a history of depression, teeth clenching and difficulty sleeping. Before initiating care, the dentist considered how these other conditions would affect treatment of the patient’s TMD.
