Abstract

The aging of the workplace calls for research on age diversity and dissimilarity that individuals experience. Using 396 MBA students in 87 intact teams that worked on projects over a period of time we examine the effect of age dissimilarity on the emotions that individuals experience in these teams. We theorized and found that greater age dissimilarity was associated with higher status for older individuals than for younger individuals. Further, age dissimilarity was associated positively with status dissimilarity and this resulted in more negative emotions especially for low status individuals who have high egalitarianism beliefs.
