Abstract

Specular reflection from a wind-roughened water surface constitutes a serious problem in the interpretation of spectral data. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the impact of wind-induced specular reflection on remote measurements of turbidity in a large reservoir. A portable spectroradiometer with 353 channels between 400 and 900 nm was used to collect data at 23 sampling sites. Five reflectance spectra were generated for each site. Relations between turbidity and the mean reflectance, and its first derivative, were analysed. The main finding was that specular reflection had less impact on derivative spectra than on reflectance spectra.
