Abstract

Separate logistics of building materials to construction sites generate many truck movements, increased mileage and increased on-site storage costs and damage risks due to the ill planned deliveries. With the Construction Hubs-project the impact of a hub for centralising construction materials at the edge of the city is investigated.MooV (https://moov.vito.be) optimised the material flows in the logistic network, with and without a construction hub, considering key decision parameters on costs, storage capacity, material quality, planning, etc.Three KPIs were calculated; economic (costs), environmental (CO2 emissions) and societal (vehicle movements and the truck load factor). The results point to a reduction of logistic costs by more than 40% when introducing a construction hub, while truck movements fall by 40% partly due to higher loading factors.
