Abstract

The use of antimicrobial agents in the surgical period is discussed with reference to the role of the anaesthetist in prophylaxis against the spread of infection in the patient, the treatment of established infection, the protection of the anaesthetist against infection from the patient and of the patient against the side-effects of the antimicrobial agents themselves.
