Abstract

The image of the castle is described in the novels of H. Walpole “The Castle of Otranto” (1764) and С. Reeve “The Old English Baron” (1777). It is explained that the castle is the central concept of English Gothic literature, while performing a plot-forming role. The general and special features of the spatial structure of the Gothic castle in the works of the founders of the Gothic novel are highlighted. It is proved that the artistic space of the castle in the Gothic work is characterized by a multi-composite image.
