Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to propose empirical criteria for the identification of urban employment subcenters. It is suggested that gross employment density (employment divided by total land area) and the employment-population ratio are the best measures to identify an urban zone as an employment subcenter. These measures are used to identify employment subcenters in the Chicago SMSA in 1970, and previous studies of housing and land prices in Chicago are reviewed.
