Abstract
The number and arrangement of genes coding for immunoglobulin (Ig) light and heavy chains have been the subject of much discussion (Gaily and Edelman 1972). The existence of classical Mendelian genetic markers in C regions led to the suggestion that there is a single or a few C-region gene(s) for each type or class of Ig chain (Gaily 1973), and there is considerable evidence to suggest that the number of V-region genes is somewhat larger (Smith et al. 1971; Weigert et al. 1975). However, neither the absolute number of V genes nor the origin of V-region sequence diversity for any Ig chain has been clearly established. Furthermore, in no case have genes coding for any Ig chain been genetically located in the linkage map of any organism.
