Abstract
THE HYPERTENSION Detection and Follow-up Program (HDFP) was a national, multicenter, randomized, 5-year clinical trial of the effectiveness of antihypertensive therapy in reducing all-cause mortality in hypertensive participants screened from the general population. The study was funded under contract by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Clinical centers in 14 US communities were selected by competitive contract review to participate in the study. Also selected were a Central Laboratory for standardized determinations of participant biochemical values, an ECG Center for standardized ECG interpretations, and a Coordinating Center for (1) data collection, (2) monitoring and analysis, (3) standardization, staff training, and regulation of study protocol, and (4) overall project coordination.
