Abstract

1. A classification of regional pulmonary hyperlucence has been offered. 2. Emphasis has been placed on the differentiation of the three hyperlucent entities occurring in adults which are most frequently misdiagnosed in clinical practice. The pathologic changes and criteria of these three entities have been discussed under the headings: a. The so-called “idiopathic unilateral hyperlucent lung” or Swyer-James syndrome. b. Unilateral pulmonary artery absence. c. Unilateral pulmonary artery “hypoplasia.” 3. There is a brief discussion of several other entities which radiographically are superficially similar, but in which the differentiation is made relatively readily by the associated clinical features.
