Abstract

Surface tension and light scattering measurements were carried out to determine critical vesicle/micelle concentrations of some polyoxyethylene glycol dialkyl ethers and their sulfur analogs. Using hexaoxyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers as standard compounds, the effective lengths of the hydrophobic chains in the surfactants, as well as the increments for the characteristic groups, were calculated. Sulfur atoms show a weak hydrophilic character, but their hydrophilicity disappears as the length of the thioethylene chain increases.
