Abstract
The present paper is concerned with the hydrodynamics of a free, cylindrical liquid jet and forms the first part of a set of papers on the influence of jet hydrodynamics on direct contact heating. In the present paper the available literature is discussed and special attention is paid to existing differences between the cited authors' conclusions. On the basis of our own experiments the influence of individual variables on the jet hydrodynamics was analysed qualitatively. Correlations, which hold in the investigated area, are proposed. The phenomenon of hysteresis in the case of flow through short nozzles (L/d < 2) having sharp inlet edges was observed.
