The Hybrid Socio-Technical System for Strategic Landslide Disaster Risk Reduction in Indonesia

Abstract

The importance of integrating social and technical approachs is promoted in order to develop a “hybrid socio-technical system” as an innovative and strategic program for landslide disaster risk reduction in Indonesia. Such programs mainly based on public education and empowerment as well as community participation, under the partnerships of Gadjah Mada University, national and local governments, local universities, private companies such as through the Corporate Social Responsibility Program of several oil companies in Indonesia, as well as with relevant International Funding Institutions such as the British Council and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Indigenous, simple and low cost technology was also introduced and developed as a part of the hybrid socio-technical system, in order to ensure the effectiveness of implementing such technology, for the life and environmental protection. The International Consortiumon Landslides (ICL) through the International Program on Landslides (IPL) has been playing an important role in supporting the development of this Hybrid Socio-technical System for landslide early warning system and disaster risk reduction in Indonesia.
