Abstract

The purpose of this research aimed to explain what kinds of ethnic issues were presented in boxing movies. This research took the movies of ”The Hurricane” & ”Ali” for examples and used the narrative theory to discuss the events and scenes in the two films, and then discussed the connotative meanings. There were three results found in this research.1. According to the analysis of movie events, events in both movies were matched with the ”three-act-structure” which was developed by the classic Hollywood.2. According to the analysis of movie scenes, as for the time of scenes, both the main characters in movies were during the time from 1960s to early of 1970s when the enthusiasms of democracy, human rights, and social reform caused by Vietnam War made the human rights movement of Africa-Americans develop. Moreover, it presented ”binary opposition” as the space of scenes in both movies.3. As for the analysis of the connotative meanings, both the movies discussed the issue of racial discrimination in the beginning. Further, in the end of movie, ”The Hurricane”, the issue of racial integration was discussed while the other movie, ”Ali” was not. However, there were also little differences in these two movies.
