Abstract
Lynne V. Cheney, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, wrote in NEH's 1987 report, American Memory: "We all have a stake in seeing to it that the humanities are properly taught and thoroughly learned in our schools." How this should be done is the basis for the discussion by NASSP Bulletin editor Tom Koerner with Cheney.
