Abstract

The largest curved jacking pipe roofing tunnel - Gongbei Tunnel - is under construction at present in Zhuhai, China. It is a significant part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, using the curved jacking pipe roof method and freeze technology. Crossing the Gongbei Port, the total length of this tunnel is 255 m. It consists of a transition curve that is 88 m in length and a circle curve that is 167 m in length. The supporting structure is made up of 36 steel pipes with diameter of 1620 mm, forming a huge oval section shape of about 22 m in width and 24 m in height. Therefore, the huge dimension decides the construction of jacking pipes must cross in multilayer soft soil, such as: artificial fill; clay; very soft, silty clay; and, sandy gravel soil. In addition, the highest groundwater pressure is close to 30 m at the bottom of the tunnel. So, this project is faced with complex geological conditions. Four AVN1200TC pipe jacking machines of Herrenknecht have been used to install the steel pipes string. This paper: (1) provides an overview of this project and (2) summarizes the challenges faced and the techniques used to handle the difficulties encountered during construction.
