Visvanathan, N. Abstract The local velocity deviation is studied using a sample of 311 E, S0, SB0, and SB0/a galaxies taken from the magnitude-limited Shapley-Ames catalog. Absolute magnitudes are derived by assuming that the distance modulus of the Virgo I cluster is 31.70. A plot of log radial velocity vs. reduced isophotal magnitude reveals a well-defined redshift-magnitude relation with a slope of 5. A luminosity bias is identified, and the sample is suitably adjusted to obtain a distance-limited sample from the magnitude-limited sample. An unbiased sample consisting of 159 galaxies with log radial velocity of no more than 3.40 yields a value of 50.8 km/s per Mpc for the Hubble constant, while a subsample of 104 galaxies in the region of sky containing the supergalactic equatorial belt yields a value of 52.1 + or - 2.2 km/s per Mpc. It is suggested that on the average the effects of the Local Supercluster velocity field in the uniform Hubble flow in the local region is only about 7%.
