Abstract

This article is a study of the development of the Chinese orchestra or huayue tuan in Malaysia. The ensemble is known by various names in other countries where Chinese predominate: minzu yuedui (national orchestra) in Mainland China; zhongyue tuan (Chinese orchestra) in Hong Kong; and guoyue tuan (Chinese orchestra) in Taiwan. This study focuses on the history, organization, sponsorship, membership, repertoire and the problems faced by the huayue tuan since its inception in Malaysia in the 1960s. It addresses the question of the survival of the huayue tuan within the wider context of cultural and political changes in Malaysia. Like the other Chinese performing arts, the huayue tuan survives because it has been adapted and transformed according to the local situation.
