Abstract

The principal stimulus to the development of a vasectomy clinic was the unfavorable publicity given the steroid pill during a Senate subcommittees hearings in 1970. The Planned Parenthood of Houston organized the clinic after the need had been established by a survey of urologists in the area. The organization of personnel and the technique of vasectomy used are also discussed. Complications after 1221 vasectomies were: 2 scrotal hematomas 2 superficial abscesses 4 cases of epididymitis 2 cases where the vas had not been identified or removed and 3 cases of recanalization. An analysis with respect to age of patient marital status number of living children education race and income is presented. A financial breakdown of the clinics income and expenses indicated that 1221 vasectomies cost about $93000. A vasectomy clinic or referral service should be regarded as an intrinsic and important function of all family planning clinics in a large- or medium-sized metropolitan center containing one or more medical schools or centers.
