Abstract

One of the striking features of modern tourism has been the spectacular growth in tourist traffic to the Mediterranean coastlines. The participation of Cyprus in this development has been unprecedented and the growth in tourist arrivals has by far exceeded that in any other Mediterranean destination. The hotel industry has contributed much to this success. However, it is now facing problems of competitiveness, with a shortage of some types of accommodation and an oversupply of others. Dr A. Andronikou, former head of Cyprus's National Tourism Organization, here examines the current state of the country's hotel industry and the problems and opportunities occurring and suggests a way forward to maximize the latter and minimize the former.
