Abstract
Politically, New Guinea is divided into three parts (see figure 19.1). A boundary crosses the island from north to south. West of this line is West Irian, part of Indonesia which once belonged to the Dutch. The eastern half of the island is divided into the Trust Territory of New Guinea in the north and the Territory of Papua in the south.
