Abstract
The Federal Register states that a hospice must furnish a “homelike atmosphere” and private space for families both during and after terminal illness [1]. A hospice inpatient unit, “Hospice House,” was designed and implemented to meet that requirement [2]. The Hospice Environmental Survey (HES) was originated as an evaluation instrument to measure the mandated “homelike atmosphere” and to provide a baseline for future investigations [3]. The objective of the HES was to obtain a measure of the user's perception of the “homelike atmosphere” and the overall environmental impact provided by Hospice House. The HES was distributed to Hospice House users at the end of the first year of operation. In this article we present the HES instrument, methodology, and pilot study data.
