* Previous drafts of this paper were presented to the Seminar on the Capitalist Enterprise, Harvard University, in February 1982, the Economic History Workshop, Harvard University, in April 1982, and the 23rd Annual Cliometrics Conference, University of Iowa, in May 1982. The final version was presented to the Labor Seminar at Harvard University in February 1984.
