Abstract

This chapter sets the scene in which the principal ‘dramas’ of the book are played out. It recounts the erosion or collapse of the old certainties in labour law. It points to the accelerating gap between labour law's seminal ideas and institutional achievements, on the one hand, and unfolding political, legal, social, and economic developments on the other. Focusing on labour law's capacity in these new circumstances to accomplish projects of egalitarian redistribution, the chapter calls for a reinvention of the discipline so that it can contribute effectively to social transformation in the 21st century.
