Abstract

The “Hodder” phenomenon (discoloured sea-water patches) observed in 1902 off the west coast of St. Lucia (Lesser Antilles) cannot be ascribed to a submarine volcanic eruption, since recent detailed bathymetric surveys did not reveal any active submerged volcanic edifice. It is assumed that this event was due fo fault reactivation triggered by seismic shocks occurring during a major volcanic crisis affecting Martinique and St. Vincent.
