Abstract

SUMMARYThe environment of an apiary on bare ground is about 5° C. hotter in summer than the shade air temperature, which in Western Australia frequently exceeds 32-2° and is commonly over 37-8°. The most effective protection of colonies from very high temperatures when shade is not available was found to be the use of white paint on all external hive surfaces. The use of aluminium paint gave higher hive temperatures. Substantial benefit was obtained also from top ventilation up to 58 sq. cm., and by avoiding a deep entrance; entrances 5 cm. high increased the hive temperature.
