Abstract

The profession of the nurse has gone through complex stages of development from the primitive communal system to the present, where the nurse has a thorough preparation and rich professional experience. The purpose of the study is to determine the historical prerequisites for the formation and development of nursing in the early twentieth century, to study the contribution of Virginia Henderson to the development of nursing science. In the domestic literature paid attention to the history of nursing development, as well as the study of models, which causes the novelty of the study. The functions of the nurse are much broader than the simple fulfillment of the instructions and prescriptions of the doctor. On her shoulders are laid the main responsibilities for caring for the patient, preventing diseases, preserving health, rehabilitating and alleviating suffering. It is this model where the nurse directly takes care of the patient was suggested by Virginia Henderson. She managed to develop a system of principles that served as a guide for the nurse in the care of the patient. Prior to Virginia Henderson, the main thing in the care of the patient was the doctor and his diagnoses, but now the most important person here was the patient and his needs. Henderson changed the attitude to the profession itself, as well as its goals. The author comes to the conclusion that Henderson's theory has had a tremendous impact on the comprehension of nursing practice around the world, and many created models of nursing are based on her work.
