Abstract

Based on the database «Political space of industrial cities in the Urals», the article analyzes the ways of subsoil use subjects to be reflected in the heraldry and branding of Ural cities. The coats of arms of 55 cities in three subjects of the Russian Federation (Perm Krai, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions) have been studied, which reflected the subsoil use (extractive industry) stories. A separate group comprises 29 cities with similar heraldic symbols. The formation of the studied sets was carried out according to two criteria. The first criterion was the presence of non-heraldic figures in the coat of arms directly related to the subject of subsoil use; the second one being the official interpretation of the coat of arms, fixed by normative legal acts of representative bodies of municipalities and indicating the connection of figures and /or colors with the subjects of subsoil use. It is determined that the figures (non-heraldic) and colors, through which the symbols of subsurface use are represented in the coats of arms of Ural cities, can be grouped into the categories «mineral wealth», «minerals», «mining». The research of branding practices has shown that the key strategy for branding industrial cities in the Urals is spontaneous practices through the formation of a certain slogan-formula describing the ambitions of the place, where the key is the image of industry «capitals» (Salt capital, Copper capital, etc.).
