Abstract

In spite of the sophisticated data and technical papers published about graphite products, especially electrodes and structural graphites, the blender and user of lubricants know little about graphite in powder form. In many cases powders are accepted on little more than a code, and at most, an approximate ash content and a sieve number is all that is provided. This takes no account of the differences in characteristics than can occur between powder sources and even batches within the same sources. The Swiss company of Lonza, who commenced making calcium chloride in 1897, make nearly 200 products today in the inorganic, organic and plastics fields as well as fertilizers and agrochemicals. They hold a considerable share of Europe's electric furnace capacity for a range of inorganic products, one of which is graphite powder. This article describes their graphite powder technology.
