Abstract

The United States has enacted and pursued many different policies towards the Indian Nations and Indian peoples of the U.S. Over more than two hundred years, the federal government has swung between advocating the extermination and assimilation of Indians and tribal governments to the modern day idea of preserving and supporting tribal governments and sovereignty. This article clearly describes these federal policies in a chronological order.
