Abstract

The purpose of this historical outline is an attempt to chart the first series of relevant events that trace the history of special care on the premature infant from early neonate intensive care unit to the assessment of early intervention of physical and caretaking environment. This overview will focus in particular on (1) the medicalization of birth (2) early neonatology with the development of first incubators and the medical expertise for survival and safety (4) the importance of parents’ involvement in caretaking environment and early intervention.
