Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the history and development of computer-based safety systems for offshore oil and gas production platforms from the 1960s to the present days. The growing awareness of safety concepts throughout the industry has encouraged the production of a number of informative guidelines, leading standards embodying good engineering principles, and safety concepts. A large offshore oil and gas production platform has to provide all of the facilities of a typical land-based site production facility, all compacted together in a relative pinhead. The production facilities range from drilling and wellhead control to oil, gas, and water separation, and where necessary, gas compression and reinjection or export facilities. The certification by the regulatory authority of the safety systems enables production to start all maintenance actions being under strict control. In principle, a permit to work systems is operated with senior management personnel providing the logged documentation that enables the maintenance staff to work on particular areas of the equipment.
