Abstract

Although the literature affords a mass of information concerning deviations in the histologic structure of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis, but little has been published regarding histological findings in this structure in cases of malignant tumors, especially carcinoniata. These variations appear with a certain regularity and a fixed morphological picture, showing corresponding changes associated with hypofunction of the other endocrine organs (Berblinger). Thus Karlefors (14), as well as Berblinger and Muth (2), examined the anterior lobe of the hypophysis in cases of carcinoma with widespread metastasis. In 14 male subjects ranging from 18 to 60 years of age on whom autopsy had been performed, Karlefors was able to point out that the “Hauptzellen” played the chief rôle; also in four of five cases of sarcoma. A similar condition obtained in 14 of 17 cases of women suffering from carcinoma, as well as in one woman who died of sarcoma.
