Abstract

SYNOPSIS The Highlands Close group active solar heating scheme supplies solar space and water heating to seven local authority flats and solar water heating to a further seven houses mainly during the summer months. The system comprises 136 m2 of flat plate collectors integrated into the roofs of the houses, a 7 m3 water solar store and a distribution network to the dwellings which have individual gas boilers for auxiliary heating. The control strategy adopted models that of a much larger solar district heating scheme where control units in the dwellings sense solar distribution circuit temperature rather than solar store temperature per se. The scheme has operated for over a year and an assessment of its performance is presented. Issues related to control strategies and system configuration for group solar schemes generally are also discussed.
