Abstract

The DC magnetic susceptibility of ceramic YBa 2Cu 3O 7−∂ was measured for various oxygen contents (0 < ∂ < 1.0) up to a temperature of 1000K. The susceptibility data showed a strong oxygen dependence and also evidence of a Curie Weiss contribution. A study of two common impurity phases, BaCuO 2 and Y 2BaCuO 5, revealed strong Curie Weiss behaviour in each case. A kink superimposed on the susceptibility data of YBa 2Cu 3O 7−∂ for ∂ > 0.6 was identified and attributed to the superconducting phase. Further analysis of the intrinsic susceptibility data for YBa 2Cu 3O 7−∂ indicated the existence of long range antiferromagnetic ordering with Néel temperatures in the region of 360 to 390 K.
