V. The C^{3}Π_{u} <- Χ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+} System. Tilford, S. G. ; Wilkinson, P. G. Abstract The C + system of nitrogen has been photographed in absorption at high resolution in the fourth and fifth orders of a 21-foot vacuum spectrograph. With the argon continuum as the absorption background, only the (0-0), (10), and (20) bands could be observed; these show nine branches. The analyses, together with the intensity distribution, confirm that the upper electronic state must be C H . :v = O,J = 18,F1v = 1,J = 21,F1v = t,J = 17, F2; V = 1, J = 13, F3. It is suggested that the perturbing state is w1A,#. The molecular constants as obtained (in cm-1) are: T00 = 88977 89; Fi0( co = 2047.17s; Y2o (== -co = -28.443o; Y3o ( co,y ) = 2.O883 and Y40 (== -w = -0.5350 for C ll . The rotational constants of C ll are in agreement with those obtained by Dieke and Heath from the C ll B llg bands in emission. A detailed comparison of the present results with those of Dieke and Heath leads to a corrected value of T00 = 49754 82 for the A 3 state of nitrogen. The branch intensity formulas for a H X + transition have been derived in the manner suggested by Chiu. The resulting formulae differ slightly from those given earlier by Schlapp and Bud6.
