Abstract

As part of the intensity upgrade program for the GSI accelerator facility, a compact beam stripping and charge analyzing system was developed. It will be installed in the transfer line to the Heavy Ion Synchrotron SIS. Fast magnetic deflection of the ion beam over the stripper foil is employed in order to avoid evaporation of the foil. The differently charged ions after the stripper are separated in a four magnet analyzing system, to limit space charge effects to a short distance. Principles of operation and the design of the magnets are presented.
