Abstract

The psycho‐social implications of the heroin epidemic, which was triggered off by the rash prescribing of a number of doctors in the London area, are discussed, especially in relation to those countries who do not as yet have a narcotics problem. Those who may be most vulnerable in a naive population to becoming addicted to hard drugs, should these become available, are described. Progression from soft to hard drugs is discussed. Narcotic addiction is seen as a psycho‐social problem and the heroin experiment in the United Kingdom and the phenomenon of heroin addiction itself as no more than a psycho‐social “marker” which culls out from a young, exploratory population the most psycho‐socially damaged. A prophylactic programme is tentatively outlined.
