Abstract

This chapter examines the herbaceous layer dynamics of old-growth forests. It aims to do the following: (1) clarify the factors that constitute old-growth forests in most mesic eastern deciduous forests; (2) describe what is known about composition, structure, and diversity of the herb layer in old-growth forests; (3) evaluate the differences between old-growth and second-growth forests with respect to the herb layer; and (4) assess the linkages among stability, diversity, and habitat invasibility.
